               PLANNING A WEDDING?

A wedding is a happy occasion that deserves celebration. It can be even happier if the wedding company enjoy their wines, and especially so if that can be achieved within a reasonable budget. We have experience over many years of serving customers who make a special trip across the channel to buy their wedding wines at our Cherbourg or Ouistreham shops. Several points are worth remembering:-

1. There is a substantial financial advantage in buying wine in France. The £2 per bottle (more on sparkling wines) saving in excise duty makes a considerable difference to the overall cost. A day return fare on the ferry is only a small percentage of the saving. We also offer substantial discounts on purchases of 12 bottles or more (see our Wine Lists page).

2. For a large gathering there may be a wide spectrum of tastes: this is almost unavoidable at a wedding. So we recommend soft, mellow wines rather than anything extreme. A good Muscadet may be altogether too dry to suit your maiden aunt, but a gentle chardonnay will usually appeal to most people.

3. Many customers make use of our "taste before you buy" facility, which really helps lots of people to choose something suitable for a large, varied gathering. Customers usually want quite a large quantity of wine for a wedding reception, so it helps if some of the less expensive wines suit your palate.

4. We find that the Merlot and Chardonnay from Domaine de la Ferrandiere are popular for weddings because they are good without being too expensive. (Tasting in the shop is a big help.)

5. For the toasts, many customers are undecided whether to buy champagne, or a similar, less expensive, sparkling wine.  There are good sparkling wines at a price about half that of a good champagne.  Many people feel that for a very special occasion the higher price of champagne is worth paying: it certainly guarantees the name “Champagne” on the bottle, and a good quality wine. For others, the extra cost is not justified just for the name on the bottle, and they are happy with one of the excellent sparkling wines.  It is ultimately a personal choice based on complex criteria.  Whichever you choose, you are sure to enjoy it!
