The
wine trade knew that Argentina
was capable of producing vast quantities of average, high yield wine of little
or no interest in today’s global market, but that there would have to be some
deep digging to find real quality. How wrong we all were: not only have
standards of bulk wine improved out of all recognition, but there are some real
star wines available. This brilliant range of reds comes from the south of the
country, in the region known as Patagonia, and
it is a knockout in more ways than one. The Merlot/Malbec
blend is made from young vines, but the sheer intensity of fruit, flavour and alcohol will bowl you over. There is great
structure here, beautiful balance and a lovely texture, all wrapped up in a
cocoon of silky tannins.
